Afton Kate had a full, fun day for her 5th birthday. She started the day early, getting ready for her preschool class that was also celebrating Valentine's Day that day. We had told her she would get to open one present before school and she picked the package she'd gotten in the mail from her Grandma Jensen.
Afton has insisted for nearly a year that she wanted to have a dog birthday for her 5th birthday. We weren't entirely sure what that meant (but we were entirely sure that it didn't mean getting a real dog). Stefanie also talked to her about how closer her birthday was to Valentine's Day. Afton thought it would be neat to have a dog and heart birthday. So we had pink and white and red and heart and dog decorations and balloons around for her. She got to take treats to her class for her bday, so Stefanie made some cupcakes with a Scotty dog licorice candy on top since Afton's class was studying the letter "s" that week.
Stefanie once again did a wonderful job creating the perfect birthday cake, which isn't easy to do for a 5 year old who wants a dog/heart theme. The dog was perfect, getting "oohhs" and "aahhs" from all of the kids and adults that saw it.
After school, Stefanie took Afton to the Pratt Aquatic Center to swim with Regan and Mya. Afton reported afterwards that she had gone under water "FIVE TIMES" because she was now 5 years old.
After swimming we were lucky enough to have a houseful of wonderful cousins who helped make Afton feel extra special on her birthday. They loved playing Afton's new game, Happy Action Theater for the Kinect. At one point there were 8 kids all in front of the Kinect playing at the same time. Afton and Mya love playing the game and showing it to any visitors they get.
